Project development 

As a project principal (program filmmaker as well as proposal writer and/or consultant), involvement in the development of materials (proposals, treatments, budgets, schedules, rationales, etc.) designed to raise funds (roughly $2.4 million) from a range of sources.

Projects include seven successful proposals to the National Endowment for the Humanities (development and production. Overall, wrote core fundraising materials, including proposals for:
  • Inside Story: The Science of HIV/AIDS.  Project development on behalf of the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership and its partners (2007; final budget est. $2.2 million)
  • I’ll Make Me A World, six-hour series, final estimated budget $4.5 million. Production support, request to the National Endowment for the Humanities, awarded $800,000 (1995)
  • There She Is: Miss America (broadcast as Miss America: A Documentary Film), final estimated budget $1 million. Production support, NEH, $700,000 (2000)  
  • Hope & Healing: The Untold Story of the Ellis Island Hospital. Production support, request to the NEH, awarded $425,000 (2004)
  • This Far By Faith: African-American Spiritual Journeys, six-hour series, final estimated budget $4.5 million.  Production support, request to the NEH, awarded $250,000 (1998) 
  • Leadbelly: The Life & Legend.  Development support, request to the NEH, awarded $60,000 (1998)
  • 45 Words: The Story of the First Amendment. Development support, request to the NEH, awarded $60,000 (2004)
  • Slam Dunk: A Basketball History of the 20th Century, six-hour series.  Development support, request to the NEH, awarded $60,000 (2002)
  • “Along the Hudson-Champlain Corridor,” series at the University at Albany, request to the New York Council for the Humanities, awarded $19,200 (2009, co-writer) 
  • “Louisa May Alcott,” support for visiting filmmakers, request to the NYCFH, awarded $2500 (2010)
  • "New York Sings!" UAlbany event at Capital Repertory Theatre with music scholars/performers, request to the NYCFH, awarded $1680 (2012)
Additional consulting on numerous successful proposals for media projects, events, public engagement campaigns and more. I've also served as a proposal reviewer for a number of arts and documentary organizations, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York State Council on the Arts, and others.
